2020 is almost here! If you’ll be in Cairns for New Years Eve, here are all the events that will be happening around town.
If you’re all about the fireworks
You don’t need to pack into the sardine can that is Sydney on New Years Eve to appreciate a cracking fireworks show. Right on the Cairns Esplanade there will be a fireworks display at 9 PM and again at midnight. This is a family friendly, alcohol-free event so if your plan is to be on the drinks, better to keep reading for all the wild parties that will be raging on across town all night.
If you just want a good backpacker party
The Woolshed will be banging on until 5 AM on New Years Eve. There’s no theme, but tickets are available online for $20. Buying in advance gets you a better price and a quicker entry on the night. The Woolshed is the most quintessential backpacker bar in Cairns so head here and you’re almost guaranteed to reunite with a friend from your East Coast trip.
If black is your favorite colour
The Attic (part of Gilligans) is hosting a black masquerade party with special guest, JaySounds. Dress up in all black and prepare for a night of house music. Tickets are $25 online.
If white is more your style and you want to go all-out
Gilligan’s is hosting a white party for New Years Eve. It’s the same entry ticket as the Attic, with the extra option to go all out with their Snow White VIP Package. For $70 you get your ticket for both the Attic’s party and Gilligan’s party, plus a 2 hour warm-up party. From 7-9 PM you’ll get open bar with basic beers, wine, and spirits, plus canapes!
If you want to welcome back the Roaring Twenties
For 2020 The Salt House is bringing back the Roaring Twenties. Dress in your best flapper style. General admission is only $10 on the door if you want to party and see the fireworks at 9 PM and Midnight. For those who really want to go all-out for the occasion, there’s also a 2-hour premium cocktail party and a luxury three-course dinner. Tickets are $105 and $125

If 70s and 80s tunes are more your style
PJ O’Briens will be having an Abba versus Queen party for NYE. Entry is free until 9:30 PM and only ten dollars afterward. Besides a djay playing the seventies and eighties classics there will also be a live band. Decade attire encouraged!
If you can’t get enough bass in your face
Ember, a house music djay hailing from Sydney will be on the ones and twos at XS. Doors open at 9 PM and the party goes til 5. No info on entry fee. Here’s a little taste of what to expect:
If you’re an ale-drinking pirate or lager loving German
The Bavarian Beerhouse in Cairns will be having a Pirates versus Bavarians costume party. Entry is free, there’s a competition to see who’s the best dressed, and you should get a good view of the fireworks. The party’s only on until 1 AM so it might be a good option if you’re not the party-all-night type.
Wherever you choose to ring in 2020, Happy New Year from Tropic Days and Travellers Oasis!
